When I first moved to New York City, I lived in a teensy apartment on 28 St. and 5th Ave. above a store called "Latina Fashions: Clothings for Ladies and Kids." No joke, there were 5 windows in the apartment total, but not one sliver of natural light. The one great part of the view was the reflection of the Empire State Building in the windows of the building behind us. After waking late in darkness every morning, we decided to set our lamps on timers to make it easier to awaken! We also had some unfortunate critters coming and going in the night. Through all that, I wouldn't trade the experience of living there (two of us in "bedrooms," one in the living room) for anything! The location itself was amazing; it's extremely close to Madison Park, and right around the corner from Waldy's Wood-Fired Pizza. We would order from this wonderful place as often as possible. The location itself is small, with tables and benches along one side. The star of the show, however, is the wood-fired grill in the back, where they prepare the wonderful pies. My favorite pie is the roasted eggplant and zucchini with olives pizza (shown above). The crust is wonderfully crisp on the bottom, but still slightly chewy on the inside. The vegetables are fresh, and Waldy's supports local growers and cheesemakers (they serve a tomato salad with local mozzarella, among other local dishes), so you can eat this pizza without guilt! I love that they go the extra mile when it comes to add-ons: alongside the usual red pepper flakes, garlic powder and parm, they grow fresh basil and rosemary, so you can personalize as much as you want. I love the pizza toppings they offer: from the above vegetarian, to lamb, roasted lemon and oregano, to chicken with bacon and chipotle peppers. There's even a pizza with eggs on it! They also serve a few salads, and penne if you're not into pizza. To finish the meal, they sell sorbets and gelato, as well as brownies. If this isn't what "something for everyone" means, I don't know what is! After all that, they even have beer and wine for a cozy laid-back date! The pizzas also come in sizes great for non-sharers: the above pizza is a small personal one, perfectly big enough for preparing for a night out! I used to go swing dancing every Thursday nearby, but wouldn't have time to make dinner at home. I would take a book with me and eat my pizza with a glass of wine, then dance the night away. Though I have since moved from that apartment and neighborhood, I still try to get back there as often as possible, which is never often enough!
