Kathi, Ashley, Maya and I walking the High Line! New York City has so many wonderful places to offer: from parks and museums to restaurants and architecture, there's always something to do! This May Day, a few great gals and I decided to meet up and take advantage of just a few of these wonderful hot spots. We started at the Chelsea Market, which is this beautiful indoor mall, with lots of great food stores, cafes, and specialty shops. The location used to be the National Biscuit Company complex, so there are tons of great warehouse details like exposed beams and other industrial archaeology. There's even a fountain in the middle, but it looks more like a part of the factory that is still working, and it is lit with multi-colored lights! Some of the decor at the Little Cheese Pub. We then walked the High Line, which is this beautiful park along what used to be a raised train line. The park designers used the train tracks as their inspiration and made the walkway from beams of concrete that organically ebb and flow into the landscaping. The plants themselves are interesting, as well: there are birch trees and tall grasses, and the view is amazing. From some spots you can see the Hudson River, and from others the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, not to mention all the other amazing newer buildings along the way, from 16th Street up to 20th. There is even a part of the walkway that is under another building, that has great acoustics and housed a small choral group which gave us a lovely soundtrack for part of the walk. The cheese plate we sampled. By then we were hungry, so we continued our journey up to 23rd St. and 9th Ave., where The Little Cheese Pub was waiting. The first thing that I noticed was how small it is. I had seen the website, and expected a locale that was larger than most, but the decor is perfect once you're inside. Along one wall there are tables for two, while the center is reserved for communal tables with stools that swivel out from under them on large hinges. The other wall houses the extensive beer and wine selection consisting of a few beers on tap, some wines on tap, and lots of bottled beer kept cold in a glass-doored refrigerator. I was hoping to keep to a healthy diet at least a bit, and was pleasantly surprised that we all agreed on ordering a cheese plate and some delicious dips. All came with toasts, and the cheese plate came with an apple compote with mustard seeds: a perfect accompaniment to the cheeses we picked. The menu also boasts multiple recipes for macaroni and cheese, as well as cheesy toasts and a large selection of other dips and cheese plates. I was nervous that I'd get hungry later, but it turned into the perfect late lunch, complete with girl talk and strengthened friendships! It had been too long since I'd had a real girls' night, so I soon hope to have another marvelous afternoon like this one.
